Zeranol (Zearalanol) has been widely adopted as a growth stimulant with oestrogenic activity and is also employed to reduce stress in cattle; Its application has been banned in the EU since 1985. More recently it has been shown that zeranol may also be formed in vivo from the mycotoxins zearalenone and α -zearalenol, which can be carried over from contaminated feedstuffs to animals.
