MUN milk urea nitrogen rapid test strip

Milk Urea Nitrogen (MUN) is another tool nutritionists and veterinarians can use to monitor the protein nutritional status of dairy cows. MUN reflects the amount of urea found in milk and these values are closely correlated with the concentration of urea found in the blood. MUN values can be used in conjunction with evaluating milk production records, feeding management practices, and dry matter intake, degradable protein, undegradable protein, nonstructural carbohydrates, and water intakes.

MUN Rapid Test Strips are based on the urease catalyzed conversion of urea to ammonium and carbon dioxide. The pH of the reaction medium is monitored by a chromogen and the intensity of the product color is directly proportional to the urea concentration in the sample. The urea concentration is measured semi-quantitatively by visual comparison of the reaction zone of the test strip with the fields of a color scale.
